The Parish Church (Igreja Matriz) at the Praça da Republica is the centre of the little town of Vila do Bispo, capital of the district of the same name. It has been built in the 18th century after the devastating earthquake of 1755.

Would you have expected such an official function in this unimpressive building?

Vila do Bispo: Restaurant A Eira do Mel

Vila do Bispo: Restaurant A Eira do Mel

On the western outskirts of Vila do Bispo we have found "A Eira do Mel". This restaurant is one of the best hidden gastronomic secrets of the area. The chef serves only regional specialities, following the principles of "Slow Food".

Vale do Bispo: Torre de Aspa

Vale do Bispo: Torre de Aspa

This was the only hint we could find for Torre de Aspa, on our way from Vila do Bispo to the coast. Leaving the tarmac road, we follow a road which is inevitably full of holes. As we do not have an off-roader, we decide to walk the last mile.

Costa Vicentina: Torre de Aspa

Costa Vicentina: Torre de Aspa

View from the Torre de Aspa to northern direction towards the Costa Vicentina with the beaches Praia da Cordoama and Praia do Castelejo. The Torre de Aspa (156 m) west of Vila do Bispo is the highest elevation of the Costa Vicentina, the almost untouched western coast of the Algarve. The way from Vila do Bispo through the heath is not easy to find, but the great views will compensate you for your efforts.

Monte dos Amantes near Vila do Bispo

Monte dos Amantes near Vila do Bispo

Footprints of early human beings can be found at various places in the Algarve. One of the best documented examples is the menhir garden "Montes dos Amantes" near Vila do Bispo. The so called "roteiro megalitico" leads from one menhir to the next.

Ermitage de Nossa Sra. de Guadalupe

Ermitage de Nossa Sra. de Guadalupe

The ermitage is located on the EN 125 between Budens and Raposeira. The nearby museum deals with the Age of Portuguese Discoveries and is worth a visit.
