Forte de São João de Arade
Built sometime during the 17th century, this and the Santa Catarina de Ribamar Fortress, were the main line of defence for the Rio Arade’s estuary.
Ferragudo: Fortaleza de São João
View from Praia da Rocha to the eastern shore of the river Arade. The fortress, now privately owned, was erected to protect the area against pirates. On the right hand side you find the main beach Praia de Ferragudo (formerly known as Praia Grande).
