The rollout of a new radar speed monitoring system begins next week. 50 locations have been identified by the National Authority for Traffic Security (Autoridade Nacional de Segurança Rodoviária, ANSR)  as “extremely critical”, including two spots on the A2 from Albufeira to Lisbon and three on the EN125 in the Algarve. At these hot spots 30 mobile devices will be flexibly installed on both sides of the road. The system shall be rolled out completely by January 2017 at total cost of over 3 Mio. €.

The EN125 is the only regional road included in the system, because since the introduction of highway toll on the A22 in 2011 the number of traffic accidents has significantly increased.

Here is a list of the major routes affected:

  • A1 Lisbon – Porto
  • A2 Lisbon Albufeira
  • A3 Porto – Valença
  • A4 Porto – Quintanilha
  • A4-1 Porto Matosinhos
  • A5 Lisbon – Cascais
  • A7 Póvoa de Varzim - Vila Pouca de Aguiar
  • A 8 Lisbon – Leiria
  • A24 Coimbra - Vila Verde da Raia
  • IP 3 Vila Verde da Raia - Figueira da Foz
  • IP7 Lisbon - Caia
  • IC 17 Algés - Sacavém
  •  IC 19 Lisbon - Sintra
