In the morning of May 14, 2016 the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, has attended the inauguration of the Passeio das Dunas, a promenade connecting the fishing port in Quarteira with the beach of Vilamoura in front of the Crowne Plaza hotel and the casino.

This part of the Algarve coastline, a former settlement of local fishermen, was untended for many years and considered one of the eyesores in the Algarve (“porto negro”). Now a promenade for pedestrians and bicyclist has been built along the beach, lined with artificially landscaped dunes. Various leisure facilities shall provide attractions for locals as well as for tourist, closer linking together the city of Quarteira with the Vilamoura resort. The total investment is said to be in the range of 4 million €.

The inauguration on Saturday before Pentecost is part of the Algarve Nature Week, taking place at the Passeio das Dunas from May 13 to 15 with a large program of sports and leisure activities and exhibitions.
