Linha do Algarve De Lagos a Vila Real de Sto António
The single track railway lane between Lagos in the western Algarve and Vila Real d. S. A. over 140 km has already been opened at the beginning of the last century. With 1.688 mm the track width of this brad gauge railway is compatible to the Spanish railways, with which it is connected by 3 border crossing points in the North, North-West and East of Portugal. The former connection in the Algarve via a railway fairy between Vila Real d.S.A. and Ayamonte has been cancelled already many years ago.
The section between Faro and Tunes has been electrified so that also Inter City and modern Alfa Pendular trains can use it, thus reducing the time from Faro to Lisbon to almost 3 hours. On the other sectors between Lagos and Tunes as well as from Faro to Vila Real d.S.A. only the old 3 threepart railcars can operate, so that travelling from Lagos to Vila Real takes up to 3 hours 45 min.
