| Espardarte (Xiphias gladius), the broadbill, is the only, and highly endangered, member of the swordfish family. It resembles Makaira nigricans, the blue marlin, which Hemingway introduced into literature differing from its famous counterpart in its greyish-brown colouring and smaller dorsal fin. Both the broadbill and the marlin (marlim in Portuguese), fit the typical swordfish image, do not differ in price or taste and are found on restaurant menus as grilled steaks, ideally served with butter and wedges of lemon; without these supplements, swordfish would be just too dry. |
