The baroque Church Santa Engrâcia, inaugurated only in 1966,has been converted into a National Pantheon in1916. Several presidents have been buried here as well as writers such as João de Deus and the fado singer Amália Rodrigues. Among the cenotaphs to outstanding historical personalities are Luís de Camões, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Afonso de Albuquerque, Nuno Álvares Pereira, Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator.
