Lagos: Dom Henrique
The photo depicts the city of Lagos, the westernmost part of the long sandy beach, Praia do Sao Roque, the marina and the fishing port.
Lagos: Gil Eanes
Gil Eanes from Lagos was one of Henry the Navigator’s commanders. He was the first to circumnavigate Africa’s western corner, Cape Bojador, aboard a caravel in 1434. Cape Bojador, was, according to the beliefs of the time, the “end of the world”.
Lagos: Caravel
It was in such vessels that the bold Portuguese navigators set forth from Lagos in the 15th century to sail round the African continent and find the sea route to India.

Lagos: City walls
Classified as a national monument in 1924, the first walls date back to the period of King Afonso (1291-1357), although nothing else remains from that time. The oldest remaining walls are from the 15th. and 16th. centuries which were built by King Manuel.
Lagos: Governor's Castle
An Arab construction, conquered by King Sancho I in 1189. It was the headquarters of the military government and the residence of the governors of the kingdom of the Algarve. Damaged by the earthquake in 1755, it was restored in the 18th century.

Lagos: Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
The fortress at the harbour exit of Lagos dates back to the 17th century. The entrance is protected by a drawbridge. Inside you can visit a chapel with tiles from the 18th century and rooms with exhibits from the era of Portuguese discoveries.
Lagos: Slave market
This building in “Praça do Infante” opposite Santa Maria church was probably the first place where slaves brought from Africa, in 1444, were sold.
Lagos: King D. Sebastião
The statue of the king can be found in Gil Eanes Square (Praça Gil Eanes) in the centre of Lagos. He set off from Lagos to conquer North Africa, a venture that ended in disaster. The statue of the young king with a globe and a horse’s saddle was created by João Cutileiro.
Lagos: Military depot
The 17th century building in the “Praça do Infante” opposite Santa Maria church was originally used to store arms. It has the insignia of the Count of Avintes. It is now used as an art gallery.
