Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St.Vincent) near Sagres in Portugal and the Ponta de Sagres together form the south-western corner of the European continent. The cape consists of a steep cliff of about 69 m with almost no vegetation.

Cabo de São Vicente
View from the Cabo de São Vicente to the west along the coast "Costa Vicentina". The cliffs of this part of the coast are much steeper, and the surf of the Atlantic Ocean is significantly rougher than on the Algarve's south coast.

On the surrounding cliffs, beaten by the strength of the vast Atlantic, local fishermen risk their lives wedged on dramatic perches with the thundering sea below. Year by year some of them, as well as some imprudent tourists, meet their death here.

In the large parking area opposite the lighthouse flying bargainers deal in woolens and other souvenirs. During the high season you can also find the famous "Last Bratwurst Stand before America" here.

At Cabo de São Vicente the cliffs fall almost vertically for more than 75 m and are exposed to the blustery westerly winds and the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean. It is easy to imagine why the Ancients believed this to be the end of the world.
