The castle of Castro Marim has been erected in the 13. Century during the reign of king D. Afonso III to protect the harbour on the mouth of the Guadiana river. In 1920 it has been classified as National Monument.

The nature reserve stretches between Castro Marim and the Guadiana river. The spectacular bridge can be seen already from far.
