On April the 11th the final section of the Via do Infante motorway (A22/IP1) was opened twelve long years after work on the Algarve's motorway first began. Much to the relief of both residents and visitors to the region the motorway now provides a fast, toll and congestion free route across the entire region, stretching from Vila Real do Stº António to Lagos, and a long-needed alternative to the busy EN 125.
With the completion of the A2 Lisbon-Algarve motorway and the Ayamonte-Huelva section to Spain's A49 motorway to Seville, the Algarve is now served by excellent communication routes facilitating access to the North and eastwards into Andalusia.
