Alcalar

Early settlements
Neolithic and Calcolithic Graves and Settlements at Alcalar
Alcoutim
Town located at the boarder to the Alentejo and to Spain. Two impressive castles on both sides of the bordering River Guadiana.
Algarve Coast
A coastline of 200 km
The Algarvian coast with over 200 km stretches from the Spanish border in the East to the Parque Natural do Sudoeste in the West. The coast in the Eastern Algarve is dominated by lagoons and sandy dunes, while cliffs and creeks shape the coast of the Central and Western Algarve.
Aljezur
18th Century parish church, modified since then several times. The skulls of the last two Muslims killed in Aljezur are buried here.

Alte

Pittoresque village in the district of Loulé
Located in the municipality of Loulé between the Serra de Monchique and the Serra do Caldeirao, Alte is said to be the most typical and picturesque village in the whole of the Algarve.

Cabo de São Vicente

Europe's most south-western point
Together with the nearby Ponte de Sagres the Cape of St. Vincent forms the most south-western point of the European continent.

Cacela Velha

Little old village at the coast with no car traffic. Parish church of the 13th Century with renaissance porch, picturesque small houses and a little fortress.

Caldas de Monchique

Already the Romans visited this Spa
Spa below the city of Monchique with hot springs already known in the times of the Roman Empire
Castelo de Silves
Built by the Almoravid Arabs in the 11th century, the imposing and admirable Silves Castle is a distinct reminder of the grandeur of the art of the Muslims, reflecting the splendour attained by the Islamic civilisation in the Algarve.
Castro Marim
Fortress of former strategic importance at the River Guadiana and the border to the kingdom of Castile. Castle with remainders of the old ramparts and a Roman cemetery.

Cerro da Vila

The archaeological station of Cerro de Vila is situated at the northern corner of the marina of Vilamoura, a place of a former Roman settlement.

Cerro São Miguel

Eye-catching cone-shaped mountain offering impressive views from the eastern coast and the Spanish border to almost Albufeira in the west.

Estói

Rococo palace of the Viscount of Estói with magnificent lush garden and beautiful statues
Faro
Historic quarter
Interesting historic quarter, many other places of interest and excellent shopping facilities.

Ferragudo

Picturesque little fishing village at the mouth of the Arade River opposite Portimão with a small port and narrow alleys

Fóia

Highest elevation of the Algarve(902 m), located in the Serra de Monchique. 360° views to the coast and the hinterland.

Fonte da Benéloma

Nort of Loulé
Located in the Barrocal region, the Fonte da Benémola is a protected area containing ecosystems of significant special interest, not only from the point of view of its geological and landscape features, but also in terms of the fauna and flora living there.

Forte de São João de Arade

Built sometime during the 17th century, this and the Santa Catarina de Ribamar Fortress, were the main line of defence for the Rio Arade’s estuary.
Loulé
The market hall with its interesting architecture is located in the centre of Loulé. Every Saturday a huge gipsy market is hold here, attracting people from all over the place.

Luz de Tavira

Impressive parish church in renaissance architecture with extraordinary porch and azulejos influenced by Spanish and Arabian artisans

Milreu

Roman villa
Remainders of a Roman villa built in the 1st Century A.D. as a manor house of a rich Roman. Portico and halls decorated with mosaics
Monchique
16th Century parish church with artificially carved stone pillars and church Misericórdia with carved pulpit.

Neolithical menhirs (5000 B.P.) in the surroundings of Vila do Bispo

Paderne

Paderne is a parish within the municipality of Albufeira. The ruins of the former Moorish castle are worth a visit.
Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina
One of Portugal's largest natural reserves
One of the Portugal's largest natural reserves with 70.000 ha of protected area, and one of the few locations of the Algarve where the nature environment has been almost untouched and the rich cultural and historical heritage has been preserved

Pego do Inferno

Cascade of 15m ending in a shadowy basin inviting for a bath. Leave highway at exit Tavira and follow the sign after 3 km to the parking

Ponta da Piedade

Bizarre rock formation 2 km south-west of Lagos with high cliffs, caverns and hidden creeks. Especially impressive from the sea side
Raposeira
The place where Prince Henry "The Navigator" is supposed to have lived. Many houses with original doors dating from the 15. and 16. century. Parish church with small museum of sacral art.

Reserva Biogenética de Sagres

The area from Ponta de Sagres to Cape St. Vincent is a protected area filled with a wide biodiversity of different species and natural habitats, many of which are quite unique in the world.
Reserva do Sapal
Ecological reserve between land and sea
Natural park located at the mouth of the River Guadiana. The saliferous area is hosting, among other rare species, flamingos, storks and ospreys.
Ria Formosa
Natural reserve of more than 18.000 ha and important hide-away for migrating birds and rare birds species. The information centre is located east of Olhão

Rocha da Pena

The protected area of Rocha da Pena offers one of the very best vantage points for looking out over the vast expanse of the Algarve’s Barrocal landscape with all the geological oddities and diversity of fauna and flora that the region is famous for.

Village in the district of Faro. The parish church, built in the 15th Century, is considered one of the most beautiful churches of the Algarve

Built in the first half of the 18th century, the charming Chapel of São Lourenço dos Matos provides the very best example of Algarve baroque decorative tile work.

Sitio das Fontes

The largest karst founts of the Algarve arise north of Portimao near the lower course of the Arade River.

Great views to the coast
Highest rock at the Algarvian coast (almost 160 m), some kilometres west of Vila do Bispo
Buraco dos Mouros
Stalactite cavern with three chambers, a hideaway for the Moors in former times. Many small cascades nearby.
São Bartolomeu de Messines
Birthplace of the famous poet João de Deus, parish church built in the 16th Century and town houses of the 17th and 18th Century
São Marcos da Serra
In the valley of the Creek Odeluca you find one of Portugal’s mightiest holm-oaks (Azinheira de Baião), 28m in diameter
