The birth-place of golf destination Algarve |

The person who detected the unspoiled Algarve as a promising golfing destination and created Penina in 1966, was Mr. John Stilwell, who also founded Alto Golf. Sir Henry Cotton was employed by John Stilwell to desing both Penina and Alto. Henry lived for many years at Penina. Due to his imagination today the Algarve has become one of Europe’s paradise for golfers oft all skills, rivalling the Costa del Sol.
Cotton planted no less then 360,000 trees and shrubs that have reached full maturity twenty years after a major programme of refurbishment has brought back the golf course and hotel to the luxurious standards which attracts the Portuguese Open ten times.
