Winegrowing in Portugal goes back to the times of the Phoenicians, Greeks and, most important, the Romans. Although climate conditions with more than 3.000 hours of annual sunshine are excellent, the traditional winegrowing in this area has been insignificant for many decades and not delivered wine of quality worth mentioning.
Only during the last years well-trained young wine growers have started to invest in latest vinary technology, aiming at the production of quality wines that can compete both nationally and internationally. We do hope that they succeed in re-establishing the reputation of the Algarve as an excellent wine area.
There are 4 regions in the Algarve, producing quality wines according to the standars of VQPRD ( Vinho de Qualidade Produzido em Região Determinada): Algarve Lagoa Lagos Portimão Tavira
"Vinho Regional Algarve" is the name for all other quality wines in the Algarve. |
