Sea salt: the white gold of the Algarve
The traditional salt works are found on the Atlantic coast, within the protected areas of the »Ria Formosa« and »Sapal de Castro Marim« natural parks. The design of these »salinas« follows a 2000 year old tradition.

Azulejos: coloured ceramic tiles
Mostly square, coloured tiles with a glassy surface, a heritage of the Moors. Their technique was later adapted by local craftsmen and artisans. In many towns, these tiles determine the look of churches, other public buildings and monuments as well as private houses. Façades covered with Azulejos are well protected against the aggressive maritime wind. |
