The era of the Portuguese Discoveries

The era of the Portuguese Discoveries is closely linked to Henry the Navigator (Infante Dom Henrique), who lived near Sagres. The expedition voyages sponsored by Henry began at Lagos’ port nearby and laid the foundations for Portugal’s global colonial empire.

1418

Rediscovery of the Isle of Porto Santo (belonging to Madeira islands) by João Gonçalves Zarco, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and Tristão Vaz Teixeira

1420

The Portuguese disembark on the main island of Madeira, which will be colonised by Portuguse settlers in 1425 at Henry's instigation.

1422

Portuguese navigators pass Cabo Nao, until then the last explored frontier of Arabian seafarers in the Atlantic.

1427

One of Henry's navigators discovered the Azores — probably Gonçalo Velho.

1430-31

Portuguese settlers start colonising the Azores.

1434

Gil Eanes, the commander of one of Henry's expeditions, becomes the first European known to pass Cape Bojador.

1435

Gil Eanes and Afonso Gonçalves Baldaia discover Angra dos Ruivos and reach the gold coast.

1441

Contruction of the first caravel in Lagos, initiated by Henry, the navigator, a new type of ship using the lateen sail of the Arabs.
Nuno Tristão and Antão Gonçalves reach Cape Blanco in the same year.

1444

Nuno Tristão sails on the Senegal River.
In the same year Dinis Dias comes across the Senegal River and discovers Cape Verde. By this stage the explorers had passed the southern boundary of the desert, and the Portuguese had circumvented the Muslim land-based trade routes across the western Sahara.

1444-45

Foundation of the Companhia de Lagos, which monopolises African trade.

1446

Discovery of the River Gambia.

1455-56

Discovery of the Cap Verde Islands and foray to the Guinea coast.

1460

Exploration and settlement of the Cap Verde islands by Antonio da Noli and his brother.
When Henry the Navigator dies, the Portuguese have explored the coast of Africa as far as present-day nation Sierra Leone.

1487-88

Bartolomeu Dias ronds the souther coast Africa, named by him Cabo Tormentoso (stormy cape). The later name "Cape of Good Hope" , given by King D. João II expresses his hope to having found the desired sea way to India.

1497-99

Vasco da Gama detecting the sea way to India (First voyage to India).

1500

Discovery of Brezil by Pedro Álvares Cabral on his way to India.

1501

Third voyage to India under the command of João da Nova.

1502

Forth voyage to India, this time again under the command of Vasco da Gama.

1503

Construction of the first European fortress on the Indian subcontinent by the Portuguese in Cochin (Fort Manuel).

1511

Fernando Magellan takes part in the conquest of Malacca, an important harbour, by Afonso de Albuquerque.

1519-22

Fernando Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães), a Portuguese maritime explore at the service of Spain, leads the first successful attempt to sail around the entire globe.

1524

Vasco da Gama, appointed as Vice King of India by King João III., dies the same year in Cochin.
