Carvoeiro is an old fishing village within the district of Lagoa with around three thousand inhabitants and an area of 12,8 km². It’s history dates back to the year 1544. In those days Carvoeiro’s bay was a prime target for pirates, the former name being Caboiere.
Since the 1960s the village has evolved into a tourist destination, being a favourite with families. The coast between Armação de Pêra in the east and Ferragudo in the west is dominated by bizarre rock formations, intermingled with tranquil bays with beautiful sandy beaches. On both sides of the village of Carvoeiro, hotels and holiday resorts have been erected on the cliff tops, offering splendid views to the Atlantic.
The area around Carvoeiro is also well known to golfers. The Pestana Golf Resort boasts two 18-hole championship courses: Gramacho Vale da Pinta It is also host to the world famous Leadbetter Golf Academy.
