Museu da Misericórdia, Faro
Museum of the ancient "Church of Mercy" in Faro
The sisterhood of this Mercy was established in 1581, and the first house was organized in 1583 by the Bishop of the Algarve D. Afonso de Castello Branco. After the earthquake of 1755 the renovation was started in 1795 by the architect Francisco Xavier Fabri, who designed the façade, and the work was completed in 1815 by the Bishop D. Francisco Gomes de Avellar. He also initiated the construction of the adjacent Hospital da Misericórdia, that served as the central hospital of Faro until the construction of the actual district hospital.
In 2012 the house was opened to the public as a museum with various religious exhibits.
