Location and access

Without doubt Penina is the birthplace of the Algarve´s reputation as a leading golf destination. The Penina Hotel and Golf Resort is situated on the national road EN125 to Lagos west of Portimao on the northern border of the bay of Alvor. It is only less than four kilometres drive from exit 4 of the A22 motorway.

Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course: The first 18-hole course to be built in the Algarve has been home to the Portuguese Open on ten occasions and is regarded by many as the finest course in the Algarve and beyond.

Built and laid out by the three times British Open Champion, Sir Henry Cotton, the course is as challenging as it is satisfying and as unforgiving as it is beautiful. Flanked by streams, water hazards and precarious ditches, the course boasts an array of subtle slopes and raised greens, well known for catching out even the most careful of golfers.

Penina Resort Golf Course: a pleasant Par 35 2,987 metres long, taking advantage of the principles laid down by Sir Henry Cotton with water hazards playing their best tricks; the Penina Golf Resort course, is an opportunity to fine-tune one's short game, while providing a gentle training ground for beginners.

Penina Academy Golf Course: a Par 30 just 1,851 metres long.  A short course but fun to play, which winds its way between the holes of the Penina Championship Golf Course with an inviting large lake on the par-3 3rd and a generous long par-5 on the 4th - Ideal for beginners and golfers who want to improve their iron shots.

Noteworthy

John Stilwell was the first person to recognise the unspoiled Algarve as a promising golfing destination and created Penina in 1966. Sir Henry Cotton, employed by John Stilwell, designed both Penina and Alto. Henry lived for many years at Penina. Due to his imagination, today the Algarve has become one of Europe’s paradises for golfers of all levels.
