Golf Destination Azores
Azores is an archipelago of nine larger and many smaller Portuguese islands of volcanic origin, located in the North Atlantic. The group of islands is spread out between 37° N (like Sagres and Faro) and the parallels of latitude that pass through the Lisbon area, giving it a generally tepid, oceanic, subtropical climate, with mild annual oscillations. The average temperature ranges between 14º C and 22º C, perfect to enjoy holidays in the Azores all year. The breath-taking scenery is a fascinating setting for an unforgettable round of golf and for perfect golf holidays in a peaceful environment of pure nature.
Azores Golf Courses
The Azores golf courses are located in two distinct islands:
- São Miguel with the Batalha and Furnas Golf Courses, and
- Terceira with the Terceira Island Golf Course.
The 27 holes Batalha golf course on the north coast of São Miguel, with wide fairways and dark volcanic sand bunkers, has held several events of the European PGA Tour, the Seniors Tour and the Azores Ladies Open. Only 15 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada, São Miguel island capital.
Furnas Golf Course is situated 30 minutes away from Ponta Delgada by car in one of the most beautiful parts of São Miguel above Furnas Valley. Built around the spectacular volcanic lagoon Furnas Lake with its famous boiling cauldrons, the course offers immaculate fairways surrounded by majestic Japanese cedars and the greens will test even experienced golfer.
The Terceira Island Golf Club is located on Terceira, just 13 km from the World Heritage city of Angra do Heroismo. The rural course of 18 holes with rolling hills, small lakes and lush vegetation is especially beautiful in May and June when the azaleas and hydrangeas are blossoming. The course was built in 1954 by the americans for recreation of the military personnel stationed at the Lajes Air Base.
Getting to the Azores
Direct flights to the airport of Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel, are available from many Europe metropoles (three to five hours flight time). From Lisbon and Porto there are regular flights to the Lajes Air Base on Terceira Island as well as to the other major Madeira islands. There is no direct flight from Faro airport to the Azores, you have to change plane in Lisbon.
