Loulé: Igreja Matriz São Clemente
The parish church in the historic centre of Loulé with a bell tower that used to be the minaret of a former mosque
The church was built during the 13th century, most likely on the remains of a Moorish mosque. The minaret of the mosuq, built in gray granite, was later transformed into the stanalone bell tower. The roman-gothic portal is still in its original shape; the other parts of the church have been rebuilt several times over the course of the centuries.
