Ilha da Armona
Island of the Ria Formosa opposite Olhao
Ilha da Armona opposite Olhão is part of the island chain of the Ria Formosa that extends from Faro to Cacela Velha east of Tavira, protecting the unique lagoon system against the rough Atlantic Ocean.
The island Ilha da Armona stretches from Olhão in the west to Fuzeta in the east. It can be accessed by ferry boat all year round from Faro, Olhão and Fuzeta. The small village on the western part of Ilha da Culatra is located directly opposite the centre of maritime environmental education, Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim (CEAM), situated on the eastern exit of Olhão.
The beach Praia da Armona is located on the seaside of the island. The infrastructure includes a campsite and various facilities for water sports.
On the eastern corner of Ilha da Armona there is another beach, Praia da Fuzeta-Mar. It is accessed by ferry boat, which commutes regularly from the quay in Fuzeta. Since the lagoon is quite narrow here, you can also swim, or at low tide, walk over the mudflat.
