Loulé: Mina de Sal-Gema
Rock salt mine in the outskirts of Loulé in the Barrocal region of the Algarve
The rock salt mine, located on the outskirts of Loulé, is worth a visit, although it is one of the best kept secrets in the Algarve. The salt deposit has been discovered in the middle of the last Century during drillings for water to supply livestock farming.
Today the mine consists of three horizontal tunnels, the top one at a depth of 230 m with a length of 1,3 km. Four times on workdays, a guided tour of two hours takes place to experience and discover:
- The 230 million years old geological formations
- Ancient and actual processes of rock salt mining
- Application of rock salt by human beings from history until today
