Lagos: Igreja de Santo António
The baroque church in the historical centre of Lagos, classified as National Monument of Portugal, is part o the municipal museum of the city
The church, erected in the beginning of the 18. Century, was dedicated to St. Anton, the patron saint of the military. It was initially used as church of the regiment of foot in Lagos. Sincerely damaged by the catastrophic earthquake in 1755, the regiment commander Hugo Beaty initiated its restoration in 1769. Classified as National Monument, the church is said to be the prettiest example of the exuberant baroque stile in Portugal.
