Tavira on the estuary of the river Gilão is one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve. After the earthquake of 1755, the city was rebuilt from scratch, so that the heritage of Tavira is still visible through this typical architecture of the 18th century. East of Tavira the protected lagoon landscape of the Ria Formosa begins, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a barrier of islands, including the islands of Tavira and Cabanas.
Location:
The youth hostel is situated on the upper part of the old town near the Moorish castle. Most of the points of interest such as the Torre de Tavira with a spectacular 360° view of a camara obscura and the lower part of the historical center on the banks of the river are within walking distance. A Tuk Tuk tour is recommended to explore the town, the largest sea-salt pans of the Algarve and the museum of tuna fishing.
