Praia da Rocha is the most popular main beach of Portimão.Originally a fashionable seaside resort which had the first ever casino in the Algarve, mass tourism has now turned Praia do Rocha into one of the busiest places in the whole of the Algarve. Along the busy cliff top promenade there are a number of hotels, such as the Hotel da Rocha and the Hotel Algarve Casino, plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. There is a dual carriageway, lined with palm trees, leading to neighbouring Alvor where large apartment complexes can be found. One of the most popular of these aparthotels is Clube Praia da Rocha.
The fortress (Forte Santa Catarina) on the eastern side above Praia da Rocha affords great views over the estuary of the river Arade, to the picturesque village of Ferragudo on the opposite shore and the modern marina, which is surrounded by restaurants, shops and apartments.
The beach Praia da Rocha stretches for two kilometres from the mouth of the Arade River in a westerly direction, set against the backdrop of magnificent red sandstone cliffs. Several of the most beautiful beaches of the entire Algarve are located nearby until the bay of Alvor: Praia do Vau, Praia dos Três Castelos and Praia dos Três Irmãos.
