Cabanas de Tavira is a village (vila) and parish (freguesia) in the municipality (concelho) of Tavira. The name means “Cottages of Tavira” and dates back to the golden times of tuna fishing in the Algarve, when this village was a small fishermen’s settlement.

Because of its exposed position on the lagoon of the Ria Formosa the village’s reputation as a summer holiday destination has been steadily increasing and it was given the status of an independent parish in 1997.

The island Ilha de Cabanas opposite the village stretches from Tavira in  a north-eastern direction to the picturesque hamlet of Cacela Velha. The long sandy beach Praia das Cabanas with an excellent infrastructure is located on the sea side of the island. Normal access is by ferry boat from the quay on the promenade.  As the lagoon is very small you can also reach the island by swimming  out at low tide.

Several excellent golf courses are situated nearby - Benamor, Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima.
