Santa Luzia is a parish (freguesia) in the municipality (concelho) of Tavira. The picturesque village is located on the lagoon of the Ria Formosa opposite the island Ilha de Tavira.
It was raised to village (vila) status at the end of the last century. It is known as “Capital do Polvo”, meaning the octopus capital, as these are caught in the surrounding area with bait set in earthen pots. Polvo is a very popular local specialty served in various ways in the restaurants along the promenade.
The nearest beach is Praia da Terra Estreita, located on the sea side of the Ilha de Tavira. During the summer season a ferry boat commutes between the promenade and the island which is only 50 m wide - hence the name which means “narrow land”.
