Ferragudo

Ferragudo is a parish (freguesia) in the municipality (concelho) of Lagoa in the district of Faro (Algarve).

The place is picturesquely situated opposite Portimão and Praia da Rocha on the eastern shore of the estuary of the river Arade. The former fishing village is crowned by the church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição that can be reached via precipitous narrow lanes. The walk is worthwhile, because visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the square in front of the church across the river delta to the marina of Portimão and the hills of Serra de Monchique. Unfortunately the now privately owned fortress Fortaleza de São João cannot be visited.  This used to protect the estuary mouth of the Arade against attacks by pirates together with the fortress Fortaleza de Santa Catarina on the opposite shore.

Several typical restaurants on the shore of the Arade and in the centre of the lower part of Ferragudo serve the catch of the day from the charcoal BBQs, plus delicious Cataplanas and other regional specialties. Modern holiday apartments and houses now dominate the view around the old village, taking advantage of the great location and splendid views. Marvellous beaches are located on the Arade shore and along the rocky coast between the river and Carvoeiro and in Portimão and Praia da Rocha on the opposite side of the Arade numerous sports and leisure options are available.
