Biking in the Algarve
The Algarve is an increasingly popular destination for biking, providing ideal territory for bikers of all levels - mountain biker, racing cyclists and hobby biker will enjoy all year round the varied scenic landscape and excellent weather conditions
Mountain biker and racing cyclists will welcome the challenging hills of the Barrocal and the mountains of the Serra. A well developed network of countryside roads and ways with limited traffic invites to tours with spectacular panoramic views. And the flat coastal area of the Eastern Algarve is perfect for family biking. The elite of international racing cyclists make use the favourable conditions of the Algarvian spring to participate in the Volta ao Algarve, a one week tour, to help their preparation for the racing season. The Ecovia do Algarve, a network of biking and hiking trails, has recently be installed to experience some of the most beautiful Algarvian regions: Ecovia Litoral goes from the Cap St. Vincent near Sagres, the south-western corner of the Algarve, to Vila Real de Santo António on the Rio Guadiana, the eastern border of the Algarve with Spain. From there the Ecovia do Guadiana follows the lower course of the river to northern direction until Alcoutim. The Ecovia da Costa Vicentina goes along the unspoilt western coast of the Algarve from Burgau in the municipality of Vila do Bispo to Sines in the Alentejo, leading through the Parque Natural Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, one of the largest natural reserves of Portugal.
