Parque Ribeirinho de Faro

A Sunday walk in the park along the Ria Formosa in Faro
Sunday, 20 March 2016 | Excursion

The park at the western border of Faro stretches between a small branch of the Ria Formosa and the single lane railway of the Linha do Algarve, that connects Lagos in the western Algarve with Vila Real de Santo António on the border with Spain. The area has been opened to the public as a leisure park in fall 2014. It starts at a large parking near the Forum Algarve behind the municipal theatre of Faro and ends near the hotel Ibis at the road to Montenegro and the airport. There is another nearby car park especially for caravanning.

The park with an area oh 16 ha includes a bike lane and a keep-fit trail, a small amphitheatre with a capacity of 250 people, a well equipped children’s playground and a stand to observe the birds living in the Ria Formosa. Only recently the city of Faro managed to acquire a small piece of land needed  to connect the park with the road to the district of Montenegro and the Faro International Airport. At the same time the trail shall become part of the Ecovia Litoral do Algarve with access to the beach on the Ilha de Faro. This cycle lane with a length of 237 km goes along the entire southern coast of the Algarve from Cabo de São Vicente near Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António on the Rio Guadiana.
