Inauguration of Marcelo Sousa

The new President of the Portuguese Republic sworn in

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had been elected on January 24, 2016 with the absolute majority of votes already in the first run. On March 9 he succeeded on Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who had to quit after two periods. The inauguration ceremony was attended by several chiefs of state and numerous guest of honour.

According to sources from the presidential office his first foreign tour will bring him to Rome and Madrid. There he will have an audience in the Vatican with Pope Francis in the morning of March 17, and in the afternoon he will meet King Felipe VI of Spain.
