Presidential elections in Portugal

After first week of electoral campaign Marcelo de Sousa in the lead according to recent poll

The poll results published by ZAP.aeiou.com on January 16th indicate that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has the chance to win the election on January 24th 2016 already in the first ballot. According to the Portuguese Constitution, to be elected, a candidate needs a majority (50% + 1). If no candidate gets this majority, a second round will take place between the two most voted candidates.

Here are the published results of the leading candidates:

  • Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: 54,8 %
  • António Sampaio da Nóvoa: 16,8 %
  • Maria de Belém Roseira: 16,3 %

For the first time during this campaign the former minister of health lost her second position.

On Tuesday, January 19th a second public debate will take place between all 10 candidates that will be broadcasted by TV and radio.
