Portuguese media report today that the Partido Social Democrata (PDS) and the Centro Democrático e Social (CDS) will support Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa as candidate for the next President of the Portuguese Republic. The election will take place on January 14th 2016, and according to actual polls Marcelo has a realistic chance to win already in the first ballot.
The President of the Portuguese Republic is elected by the public to a five-year term. If no candidate reaches 50% of the votes during the first round, the two candidates with the most votes face each other in a second round held two weeks later.
Since 1982 the President is the head of state of Portugal with primarily representative tasks. He nominates the Prime Minister given the election results and appoints the other members of the Government by proposal of the Prime Minister. He can also dissolve the Assembly of the Republic, which implies the need to call for new legislative elections and after the implementation of these, the resignation of the government.
